We hear people say “be true to yourself” all the time. But what if we don’t know who we are? What if being ourselves doesn’t sound that different or exciting? What if doing what we do every day doesn’t make us feel any special?
We grow up seeing celebrities and searching for that magical talent inside us, looking for those fashionable but personal outfits, thinking about what can make us be noticed and loved.
“You are one of a kind” can be such a random thing to say!
The thing is I don’t feel special most of the time. There’s nothing different about me or nothing that will make me stand out in a crowd. I am exactly the same as you, reading this right now. So what is that foreign concept of being unique? And what can you do to feel like that?
First of all, think about what you like to do and how you can make it a life priority if you want. That can be one of the things that set you apart from other people.
For instance, I love to have some alone time and think about my life and where it is going. This can lead me to be extremely disappointed at myself and the choices I’ve made or really happy if I followed through with something. But no matter the consequence, I always feel like I’ve got to know myself a lot more in the end. So if I combine this with my fascination for the written word I have this blog, something that took and still takes a lot of thinking but always makes me happy in the end. I’ve decided to make it one of my top priorities and it began to define me because of the time and effort I put into it.
Secondly, try to make the best out of your day. Even if you wake up grumpy or sad, try to see the sunshine through the clouds. Try to think of all the good things in your life. If that doesn’t work, remember that you are a human being and the fact that you’re here is kind of awesome. Remember that you are capable of great things. Maybe there’s not an epic adventure where you are a super hero and save the world in your future but there’s probably someone who could use your smile and you could be saving their day while you’re enjoying yours.
Finally, choose your own path. For me this means being responsible for our actions and don’t blaming or using others as a pretext to go somewhere or like something. I know it is hard to realize when you’re doing it but don’t force yourself to like different kinds of clothes or music because the guy/girl you’re interested in likes them. Don’t waste your time learning about things that don’t make you happy just because someone said they were cool. Trust yourself enough to know when you’re being tricked into such things or when you really want to try them because they make your eyes glow and your lips twitch up.
All in all, it’s the things you do and say that make you who you are. Is it that important to be unique? For me the answer is no, don’t be different for the sake of being different.
But if the things you do or care about are special to you, that will be one of a kind because, guess what? That’s YOUR OWN way of caring for something. That’s you! That is what you are and what you’re made of.
Decisions and choices are the things that make you special because two people can look the same, dress the same and talk the same way but it is not likely that they are going to behave exactly the same for their whole life.
How do you feel about this subject? Do you think there’s a secret potion that makes us special?
