Getting ready for a 10k – part 1

Let’s cover fitness, shall we?
From Google
In the past I was the average girl in physical education class: didn’t run a lot, didn’t like to play group sports (except basketball), constantly hoping for something to happen in the gym that would cut the classes…
Now, 3 years after high school, I still don’t particularly like to play football or pay a visit to the gym but give me some running shoes and I’m ready to go.
That’s right, the runner’s bug bit me and I can’t seem to be able to shake it off (and I don’t want to).
It started with skepticism because I was sure I wouldn’t like it. After that it came the self-conscious me, telling myself that others were looking at how slow I was. Then, after signing up for a 5k, it became clear that no matter how embarrassing it would be, I would train to get there.
Even at the beginning of the race I was sure I was going to walk some of it but I didn’t! Somehow, seeing so many people on the side pushing you, without even knowing who you are, gives you such a boost. It feels like when you push the nitrous button on Need For Speed (well, kind of!).
This takes us to the present: I have a 10k at the end of this month.
By March 30th I have to be ready to run 10 km and the 4 week training plan started yesterday. I needed to run 4.8 km… with an Oscars hangover!
Seriously, I went to bed at 5, got up at 11 and realized I needed to jump on the treadmill and get those feet moving (because a new treadmill means I only do the weekend runs outside).
Two hours after a late and big breakfast I finally put on running clothes and shoes, pulled my hair back and got that done.
It started to get difficult around the third km but after pushing through the burn on my chest and concentrating on the song in my earphones, it was over. Then came the amazing feeling of accomplishment, the smile that wouldn’t leave my face… until I had lunch and fell asleep on the couch.
My day ended with the laptop on my lap (like it is supposed to) and Daniel Craig on tv: probably the most beautiful thing I saw all day (except from my cat, of course).
Today is cross-training day and Dietbet ends in 2 days. I’ll let you how that goes.
So, what about you? Do you have a relationship with running? I accept love, hate or even love-hate ones!
