“(…) never look back, live each day with adolescent verve and spunk and curiosity and playfulness. If you think you’re still a young pup, then maybe you are, no matter what the calendar says.”
Today, my baby Flash turns 1!
While being naturally curious and outgoing, he’s everything I’m not. He completes me and forces me to be more passionate about life. I love him more than I ever thought I could.
Cheesiness aside, it really does seem like it was yesterday that I went to meet him for the first time. He couldn’t open his eyes and he still picked me before I even had a look at all the puppies.
When I say that he picked me, I mean it. He got out of the pile of brothers and sisters to smell me before any of the others had even realized I was there.
Flash was the littlest one and I fell in love with him immediately.
All cozy and warm on his first day with us.
He is a genuinely adventurous dog.
He likes to test the limits and discover everything the world has to offer. He’s not afraid of anything including loud noises and other dogs. In fact, when he’s next to them, he loves to tease and play so much it seems that humans are invisible.
Truthfully, he’s the friendliest dog. Sometimes someone will find him scary because of his size and strength, because he can knock you to the ground with excitement. But the only way he’ll kill is by licking you to death… or smothering you with toys.
Although Flash barks a lot, we always consider it his way of speaking to us.
He is very intelligent and learns all the commands incredibly fast. I call him the master of “wait” because he is so serious about his job at waiting for signals and for us to give him permission to do something…
…like to go fetch or to eat… food. Flash is crazy about food.
He steals everything but stealing food is his favortie hobby. Even though I hate it, he does that so well! He’s incredibly fast. He takes what’s on our hands just like a lighting bolt.
This is not why he got to be The Flash but the name fits him perfectly.
This is (mostly) why his name is Flash
As a dog and especially as a Labrador, Flash hates to be alone but always finds something to be entertained. He gnaws furniture, destroys carpets… but his preferred mouth objects are bones.
He is his happiest self when he goes on walks. This puppy loves to be outside… Loves the beach, the countryside and every place where he can run, dig holes and play freely.
Dogs have a way of making you instantly happier. They don’t ask for anything besides some food and your love. This is part of the reason my favorite book is Marley and Me by John Grogan. (I’ve discovered that Flash IS Marley, the world’s worst dog and the best, all at once.)
Although the book is mostly funny and entertaining, it still shows us exactly what dogs (especially free-spirited ones like Flash) want us to learn.
I have to sign off with one of my favorite quotes from Grogan:
“A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water logged stick will do just fine. A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?”
